The Last Marvel Hero I Still Show Up For

This is not exactly a review (and there is not much need for one either, since anyone who plans to watch it will probably go anyway :P). These are just some random thoughts that came to mind after watching the movie.

There are not many characters left in the Marvel Universe whose movies would make me go for a first-day, first-show screening. Who knows where Doctor Strange is with Clea. I became a fan of Wanda after WandaVision, but it is fair to say that they ruined her story too. It is the same with Thor. The declining quality of Marvel movies over the years is another reason behind this. Spider-Man is the only one left whose movie still makes me want to go for the first-day, first show, and I came out of this one quite happy 🥹

As we are getting older, it feels like the characters and the stories in these movies are growing older too 😌 The characters are becoming more mature, the plots are becoming more mature, and Tom Holland’s acting skills are maturing along with them. I had never really paid much attention to him separately as an actor, but now I feel like I can.

After Jon Watts completed the trilogy, a new director, Destin Daniel Cretton, came in for Spider-Man’s new beginning, and I am quite happy to say that he delivers! I had already liked his work after seeing the bus scene near the beginning of Shang-Chi. The action scenes in this movie are also choreographed very well. The scenes of Spider-Man swinging through the city are beautiful too. However, I could not tell whether the problem was with the 3D or the theatre, or whether those scenes were simply not made properly for 3D. It was quite bad. Maybe the first five minutes felt like 3D, but after that it felt normal. (My first viewing was in 2D though so I didn’t miss much)

The story is not dependent on cameos, and it is not a movie to watch with the hype of No Way Home, but as the fourth movie in the series, it is quite satisfying!

I do not really feel much excitement about first-day shows anymore. I did not even go to see Supergirl in theatres. But after a long time, I went to this movie with expectations and enjoyed it. I do not really have much expectation for Doomsday, though…

At the beginning of the movie, I almost felt like this was what The Dark Knight might look like if it were made with Marvel’s colour filter and comedy :P That might be saying too much, but I genuinely liked the story. Now I will wait for the next movie…
